Career Guidance Workshop
Original reporting by Solome Kalagala. Edited by Wendy Allyss & Will Law.
This year’s Career Guidance Workshop took place in late January, attended by 132 students from Primary 5 to Senior 6 classes.
The workshop prepares the students for their new classes and empowers them with skills to tackle the year ahead. This year it was hosted by St John’s Kamwokya. The students were welcomed by Charles (Church Community Mobiliser from St Peter’s Wandegeya), with a word of challenge from Genesis 49 about what destroys destiny and dreams.
Charles encouraged the students to stay focussed on their studies, holding their dreams and aspirations in mind.
Age-appropriate sessions
Students divided into 3 groups for an age-appropriate focussed session, each with their own facilitator.
1. The oldest Primary-aged children (P5 to P7) were supported by Mr Abura Richard (Deputy Headteacher of Nakasero Primary School), who gave them practical tips and ideas on how to remain focussed, and make good choices within their lessons and amongst their friends.
2. The younger Secondary-aged children (S1 to S3) were given an introduction to the new curriculum at their new schools, by Mr Kyeyune Frank (Headteacher at St Elizabeth Nkoowe Secondary Senior School). He told them what to expect as they change schools, and encouraged them to read widely and develop research skills.
3. The older Senior students (S4 to S6) discussed the statement: “My future depends on the choices I make today” with Rev Alex Bwambale, the coordinator of the Daniel Uganda Project. This project trains young Christian Leaders.
This time of teaching encouraged each student to:
remain focussed on their goals
remember that God is always with them
read, make notes, and stay organised!
Blessing & Lunch
Rev Alex prayed a blessing over all the students before they shared and enjoyed a tasty lunch together.
Books & Pens
Finally, all the students were given books and pens for the school year ahead. Another hugely successful Career Guidance Workshop, enjoyed by all.
Our thanks to the Karis team in Kampala for further empowering the students and encouraging them on their way!
